I sat on the porch swing chair and sipped on my iced tea while looking up at the moon and stars. Key number 5 should wake soon, and I wanted to be there when she did; at least it was a friendly face she would wake up to.

With my free hand, I held my keychain and rubbed Key number 5 between my thumb and index finger. This was her new home, here with me; nothing and nobody would take her away from me.

The wind blew, and I shivered. I finished my iced tea and stood up. It was time.

“Olivia,” I sang, pushing loose strands of hair out of her face. “Wakey-wakey.”

Olivia stirred and moaned at the same time. I placed the pouch on the ground and helped her to sit up. She stared at me through one eye. The other now swollen shut. She coughed and winced.

“I’m glad you’re still alive and looking so well.” I lied, of course, and crouched near her again. She looked terrible. All I needed now was for her to cry again and her look would be complete. It was a pity her face was so swollen and bruised, it ruined her natural beauty.

“There are rules you need to follow, Key Number Five.” She stared deadpan at me. “Nod if you understand.” She nodded. “Good. Rule number one is never call out. There are others here, and they understand the rules. They follow the rules because they know if they step out of line, they will be in big trouble. Nod if you understand me.” She pursed her lips, glancing away, but nodded.

I stood up and towered over her. “Look at me,” I commanded in a deep and throaty voice. My Key obeyed, craning her neck to look at me. “Good, rule number two is never fight me.” She blinked. “And the last rule is whenever I enter your little room, you do everything I want. Okay?” She pursed her lips even more and blinked. She glanced away, and a tear slipped down her cheek.

I grabbed the pouch from the floor and searched for the item I needed.

Olivia moved and winced as her broken elbow twisted. That caused me pain just watching her.

“Let me ease the discomfort for you,” I said, stepping closer.

“Stay away from me,” she hissed, scooting backward. She bumped her head against the wall behind her, not taking her eyes off me.

I stood straight and scowled. “You’re already breaking the rules, Olivia.”

“Please, Jack,” she said, crying. “Please let me go. I promise I won’t say anything. Just let me go and I’ll forget all about you.”

“Now, why would I want to do that? You’re my new favorite Key, Olivia. I want you to remember me for the rest of your life. I wouldn’t give you up for all the gold in the world.” Leaning closer, I added, “You’re very special to me.” She turned her face away from me, and I planted a delicate kiss on her cheek. “See, no pain there.”

She wiped her face where I’d just kissed her with her hand.
